The best racing game for the
Mega-CD - OK, so there are only two, but this one is a corker.
Take the Jaguar XJ220 around the world in a series of challenging
races. Game modes include the Grand Prix (a pre-set series of
races) and World Tour (player's choice of the order of races), as
well as a free practice run which proves invaluable as there is no
min-map on the race screen. This game is tough - don't be
surprised to qualify at the back of the grid and have to fight your
way through the pack each time. You don't have to win or even
achieve a podium place to progress, but you do have to win enough
money to repair the car - and even if you don't hit anything, the
tyres, brakes and mechanics cost more than enough to mean you really
do have to make a top 3 place each time to survive for long. A
fully functional track editor is included, though you will have to
create a track for each of the 16 countries to race them properly,
otherwise you'll crash to a blank screen. The graphics are
good, although the scenery is a little flat, and a choice of CD
tunes before each race should keep you entertained. Only the
spot effects spoil the show - engines sound whiny and collisions are
met with a distant thud rather than a meaty crunch, but they're not
bad enough to spoil the game as a whole. If you don't mind a
stiff challenge, this one should last you a long time. Jaguar XJ220 only carries its bar code on the spine card, not on the rear inlay. |
